When it comes to your interview performance<\/a>, you have to focus on more than just what you say, but also how you say it. A weak handshake.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

Since the handshake occurs at the start of an interview, it sets the tone for the rest of it. Make sure yours is communicating confidence and competence. This means striking the right balance. Don\u2019t offer a limp handshake the comes across as weak, or a vice-like one that crushes the interviewer\u2019s hand. Instead, aim for a firm handshake, make eye contact and smile.<\/p>\r\n

Poor posture.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

If you\u2019re slouching, it shows a lack of confidence. If you\u2019re reclining back fully in your chair, you\u2019re going to communicate a sense of boredom and detachment. In addition, when you sit with your arms crossed, it sends the message that you\u2019re feeling nervous or defensive. Instead, make sure you\u2019re sitting up straight and leaning forward slightly to show you\u2019re interested and engaged.<\/p>\r\n

Interviews are nerve-wracking experiences. However, it\u2019s important to come across as cool and calm. So avoid the urge to fidget, whether it\u2019s biting your nails, tapping your foot, or twirling your hair. These types of habits will appear unprofessional and communicate a sense of nervousness to the hiring manager.<\/p>\r\n

Too little or too much eye contact.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

It\u2019s critical to make eye contact during your interview. However, it has to be the right amount. Don\u2019t make constant eye contact and stare at the interviewer, which can come across as aggressive. However, don\u2019t avoid their gaze and look down at the floor either. Rather, make eye contact regularly as you\u2019re listening and responding to questions. But balance it out with breaks where you look elsewhere, too.<\/p>\r\n

Give them some common questions you\u2019d likely be asked so it\u2019s as authentic as possible.
